What is wrong with this country?

Yesterday I read a sad article from the front page of the Wall Street Journal talking about the difficult many parents of disabled children are facing as their children age.  Apparently our country sucks so badly that many people are practically forced to give up their parental rights just to get assistance for their grown disabled children.  Most people with disabled children already have enough challenges raising them and then when it comes time to try to give their children a little independence, the national and state governments apparently don’t set aside enough funds to help these families out.  Typically the plan is to allow a grown disabled child to be in a group home or other program that gives them support but also independence as they live apart from their primary caregiver.  It turns out that there are not enough of these programs available primarily because the funding is not sufficient to meet the need.  Many parents then are left to make difficult decisions in an attempt to get their grown children higher on the waiting list.  Some have had to abandon their children since homeless disabled people get high priority.  Some have had to move out of their own homes in order to allow their child to qualify as being on their own.  I was deeply saddened to learn of this situation given that my wife and I have a disabled child (cerebral palsy) who will likely need the same kind of assistance in the future.  I’m only hoping that we can continue to raise our child and afford what she needs, however it sounds like giving them independence could be more trouble than I had foreseen. 😦  How is it that our country can afford what it wants but not what it needs?  Is is so sad how the poor and less able people of this country always get the shaft in representation, despite the efforts of so many in the not so long ago past to have their needs become more visible.  I hope to see a revival of these types of issues in the near future since much in our country has not changed.
